STUDENT LIFE

STUDENT LIFE

Students spend a majority of their time at school, and at ES American School, we aim to provide enriching experiences for everyone throughout the year. Whether it be one of our traditional school wide events, an excursion, or an after school club, students are given ample opportunities to live the local culture and create life long memories with their classmates and teachers.

SPIRIT HOUSES

All students attending ES American School (1st through 12th Grades) are organized into one of eight Spirit Houses. The Spirit House System provides students with an opportunity to stay connected about topics that concern them, promote a healthy and constructive mode of competition based on behavior, results and cooperation, establish leadership modules, and foster a sense of community and collaboration among peers. Towards the end of the year, the Spirit Teams participate in a two part competition: Spirit Day and Mental Mania. Students put their academic and athletic skills to the test for a full day of fun, exciting competition. It is easily the most anticipated event of the year.

EXCURSIONS

At ES American School, we offer our students many field trip opportunities throughout the year. Students from all grade levels will enjoy activities off campus to experience Barcelona and its surroundings. These trips provide a community building opportunity that will help develop relationships and memories that will last a lifetime. Each year we go to new locations to ensure our students will always enjoy new sights and adventures. All of our field trips are chaperoned by ES American School teachers, creating a family-like environment among teachers and students.

GRADUATION

At ES American School, the annual graduation ceremony is a distinguished tradition. All members of the senior class (12 th grade) are given the opportunity to address the audience directly and reflect upon the memories from their years spent at our school.

STUDENT COUNCIL

ES American School is proud to offer its students the opportunity to serve as student leaders through the ES American School Student Council.

Student Council members are elected at the start of each academic year by the ES American School student body provided for by the Student Council Constitution. All full-time, year-long ES American School students with a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.00 or higher are eligible to serve as officers or representatives on the Student Council for the academic year in which they are elected.

The Student Council provides valued communication to the school and tennis academy about those issues of interest and importance affecting the lives of our student-athletes. These student leaders commit their time, energy, and ideas in order to improve the quality of life for all in our community, and they also try to add a few moments of fun to everyone’s intense schedule. By working together, they have established some memorable traditions for other student-athletes to experience and enjoy for years to come. Working as a team is their constant endeavor.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF 2024-25

Dear ES American School Community Members,

As your newly elected President, I’m excited about this year and the great things we’ll achieve together! My goal is to make sure everyone’s voice is heard, meaning we will need to be more inclusive and open to the opinions and ideas of others. One of my goals is for our community to continue growing stronger and more supportive. I’m especially looking forward to organizing events like our Halloween and Thanksgiving celebrations, where we can come together and build on the traditions that make our school unique. We will definitely need to work hard to achieve all these goals. It will take a lot of time management and patience from all of you, but we have each other for support, and I’m here if you need guidance or advice. A big congratulations to everyone who was elected, and I can't wait to work with you. Remember that each one of you has the power to make a difference. I'm sure we all have something wonderful to contribute, and I hope I can make this Student Council a comfortable zone for you to work and be productive. Let’s try to create a memorable year, and hopefully, we can leave a strong legacy behind!

Mariia Kornilova
2024-25 Student Council President

STUDENT COUNCIL ACTIVITIES

The Student Council members and advisors are some of the most active members in our community. They work diligently throughout the year to provide our students with fun and exciting opportunities to socialize, experience new cultures, and help people in need. They help create new traditions in our school that help define who we are, and raise money for charities that help local children.

Working Towards our Green Flag!

Since the 2023-24 school year, ESAS has been actively working towards becoming an Eco-School, demonstrating our commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility within our community.

Our Sustainability Initiatives

As part of our journey towards becoming an Eco-School, we have implemented several impactful initiatives to promote environmental responsibility within our community:

  • Campus Recycling System – Installed designated recycling stations in all classrooms to encourage proper waste separation.
  • Sustainable Hydration – Installed drinking fountains across campus and eliminated school water bottle vending machines, replacing them with reusable bottles for students.
  • Environmental Stewardship – Participated in UNESCO Global Action Days by organizing campus-wide stream cleanups.
  • Composting Program – Installed a vermicompost system and provided hands-on training for students to learn about organic waste management.
  • Community Awareness & Education – Integrated sustainability topics into school newsletters and launched eco-conscious campaigns.
  • Sustainable School Events – Ensured that all school events incorporate recycled and reusable decorations.
  • Eco-Friendly Materials – Implemented a whiteboard marker recycling program and transitioned to using recycled paper for all student materials.
  • Food Waste Reduction – Partnered with community stakeholders to minimize food waste and promote responsible consumption.

Theme for 2024-25: Food & Waste

This year, our focus is on Food & Waste, exploring how our consumption habits impact the environment and what we can do to reduce waste. As part of our commitment to sustainability, we are introducing vermicomposting, a natural and efficient way to recycle food scraps into nutrient-rich compost using worms.

Through this initiative, students will learn about the importance of waste reduction, soil health, and sustainable food systems. The vermicompost will not only minimize food waste in our school but also provide organic fertilizer for our gardens, demonstrating a full-circle approach to sustainability.

Community Campaigns & School Events

Beyond the classroom, we are taking action through community campaigns and school-wide initiatives to raise awareness and promote responsible food consumption and waste management. Some of our efforts include:

  • Food Waste Awareness Campaigns: Engaging the school community in discussions, workshops, and challenges to reduce food waste.
  • Eco-Friendly School Events: Ensuring our school gatherings, such as celebrations and fairs, follow sustainable practices, including composting, reducing single-use plastics, and promoting plant-based options.
  • Food Rescue & Donations: Partnering with local organizations to redirect surplus food to those in need instead of letting it go to waste.
  • Zero-Waste Challenges: Encouraging students and staff to adopt waste-reducing habits like bringing reusable containers and minimizing packaging waste.

By taking these steps, we aim to create lasting habits that extend beyond school and into our wider communities. Join us in making a difference—every small action counts!
